The Divine Guru

Once upon a time, Narada went to meet Lord Vishnu.

Vishnu honored him greatly. When Narada returned, Vishnu said, "O Lakshmi, please plaster the place where Narada was sitting with cow dung!"

Narada was standing outside when Vishnu said this. He heard everything and came back and asked Vishnu, "O Vishnu, you honored me greatly when I arrived, but when I was leaving, why did you tell Lakshmi to plaster the place where Narada was sitting with cow dung?"

Vishnu said, "O Narada, I honored you because you are a divine sage, and I told Goddess Lakshmi this because you have no guru! You are a wicked person! Wherever a wicked person sits, that place becomes dirty!"

Hearing this, Narada said, "O Lord, what you say is true, but whom should I choose as my guru?"  Vishnu said, "O Narada, go to earth. Accept the first person you meet as your guru."

Narada bowed and left. When Narada arrived on earth, the first person he encountered was a fisherman. Narada returned to Vishnu and said, "Your Majesty, that fisherman knows nothing. How can I accept him as my guru?"

Hearing this, Vishnu said, "Narada, fulfill your vow!" Narada returned and asked the fisherman, "Become my guru!" At first, the fisherman refused, but after much persuasion, he agreed.

After convincing the fisherman, Narada returned to Vishnu and said, "O Vishnu, my guru knows nothing. What can he teach me?" Hearing this, Vishnu became enraged and said, "O Narada, keep criticizing your guru. I curse you; you will have to wander through 8.4 million births!"

Hearing this, Narada folded his hands and said, "O Vishnu, please tell me how to escape this curse!" Vishnu replied, "Go and ask your Gurudev for a solution." Narada then went and told the Gurudev everything. The Guru said, "Do this: ask Vishnu to draw 8.4 million images of life forms on the earth, then lie down on them and turn around." He then said, "I have traveled through 8.4 million life forms, please forgive me, and I will never slander my Guru again."

Narad went to Vishnu and did the same. He asked him to draw 8.4 million images of life forms on the earth, then lie down on them and turn around. He said, "Vishnu, please forgive me, and I will never slander my Guru again." Hearing this, Vishnu replied, "The very Guru I was slandering saved me from the curse!"

The glory of a Guru is immeasurable! I have heard people say that a Guru should be complete, so they choose people with a great reputation as their Guru."  Darshans seem to bestow blessings upon devotees, but nothing of the sort happens!

No devotee can ever attain perfection, for only God is perfect, and no one else can become God! Therefore, it is believed that…

Remain a slave of the Guru, dumb or insane.

*If the Guru sends you to hell, keep your hope for heaven!*

Whether the Guru is dumb or insane, the disciple should always remain a slave to the Guru. Even if the Guru sends you to hell, the disciple should still have the desire to attain heaven! If the disciple has complete faith in the Guru, even the Guru himself cannot harm him!

A Guru is only a Guru, whether he is a folk Guru or a sectarian Guru!
