There are many extremely dangerous lakes and rivers around the world. Today, we're going to tell you about one such lake that will surprise you. In 2013, terrifying images of this lake surfaced. Wildlife photographer Nick Brandt took pictures of this lake (Lake Natron). These images showed frozen corpses of animals. The animals had turned to stone due to the water in this lake. The world was shocked after seeing these painful images.
This dangerous and beautiful lake is called Lake Natron, located in Tanzania. Located in the northern Ngorongoro district of the Arusha region, Lake Natron is called a salt lake or alkaline lake. This lake is believed to be extremely dangerous. It is said that any creature that comes into contact with this lake turns to stone.
The water in this lake is salty due to the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. This volcano is the first lake in the world to spew out a unique lava called natrocarbonatite. The water becomes salty due to the salt lake drawing sodium carbonate and other minerals from the hills surrounding the lake into the natrocarbonatite.
Due to the high pH level of the water in this lake, the skin and eyes of most animals get burnt. Besides, animals die due to staying in the water for a long time. Sometimes the water of this lake heats up to 60 degrees Celsius. This salt lake may not turn you into stone, but it can cause such wounds on the skin that you cannot even imagine.
The longer a person stays in the water of this lake, the more they burn. However, during the rainy season, the pH level of the water changes. If conditions worsen, a person can suffer severe burns. Therefore, this lake is considered extremely dangerous.
Key Features of Lake Natron : -
This lake is 56 kilometers long and 24 kilometers wide.
High Alkalinity : - The lake's water is highly alkaline, with a pH level of approximately 10.5. This water contains sodium carbonate and other minerals, making it very caustic.
Stone Statues : - Stone statues of dead birds and animals are visible along the lake's shores. This is because the lake's water and mineral residues, after death, petrify the bodies of these creatures, acting as natural preservation agents, similar to the practice of mummies in Egypt.
Red Color : -The lake's water often has a red color, which is caused by halophilic microbes living in the water.
Importance for Flamingos : - Despite its dangerous nature, the lake is an important breeding ground for flamingos, as their skin is tough and scaly, protecting them from the effects of the caustic water.
Other names : - Due to its dangerous nature, it is also known by names like 'Mummy Lake' and 'Zombie Lake'.
