Once, Ramesh, an auto driver, was sitting at a tea stall early in the morning. He saw in the newspaper, "Arvind Malhotra, the city's leading businessman, has received the 'Entrepreneur of the Year' award."
Ramesh thought to himself, "Look, these are the happy people. Big cars, bungalows, fame—we just sit around gathering dust."
He began dreaming of a life like Arvind's.
Meanwhile, Arvind Malhotra, the owner of the city's largest company, was talking to his doctor on the phone that very morning—"My blood pressure is high again, I'll have to cancel the meeting."
He looked down from the window—an auto driver just like Ramesh was humming along on the road.
Arvind thought, "Look, living without any tension, not having to answer to anyone, not having to prepare any reports—this is truly happy."
His son, Vikram, was sitting at home, using his mobile phone. He was irritated by his friends' social media posts—some traveling abroad, others looking perfect at weddings.
He thought, "Papa has money, but no time. I'm all alone, what's the point of all this?"
Vikram went down to the park, where his childhood friend, Ravi, was playing cricket with the children. Ravi was a school teacher. Vikram said, "You're really cool, no money chasing, no meetings."
Ravi smiled, "Brother, I have less money, but I sleep peacefully and play with my children. This is life."
In the evening, Ravi arrived home. His wife told him that the gas cylinder had run out and his salary hadn't arrived yet. He was a little upset and said, "If only I had a little more money, I could take the children on a trip. People like Arvind are truly happy."
Meanwhile, at night, Arvind was sitting on his balcony. He was looking at the moon in the sky and thinking, “I have everything, but no peace. That Ramesh the auto driver, he was the happiest of all—no responsibility, no worries.”
And at that very moment, somewhere far away, Ramesh was sitting on the floor with his family, eating hot dal-rice. The children were laughing, his wife was humming a song.
Ramesh said to himself, “It was a good day today. My stomach is full, everyone is happy—that's what happiness is!”
