Sunita had come to her maternal home today. It had been two years since her father had passed away. Mother—Sarla Devi was now alone, but she never showed her loneliness to anyone.
As soon as the door opened, mother welcomed her with a smile—"Oh daughter, you have come... see, I was thinking about you."
Sunita hugged her mother, but as soon as she hugged her, she felt her mother's body trembling slightly. Somewhere inside, she felt restless. Sunita knew from her childhood that her mother never let any pain show on her face.
In the evening, when everyone finished their dinner and started their work, Sunita went and sat next to her mother. "Mother, tell me the truth... are you okay? Are you not alone? Bhaiya and Bhabhi are busy with their work the whole day."
Sarla Devi smiled softly—"Daughter, loneliness surrounds everyone at some time or the other. But I consider it a test given by God and bear it." Sunita kept looking at her mother. She was thinking, if father was here, there would not have been this silence on mother's face.
Brother Vinay and Bhabhi Meenakshi were good, but also busy. Shop business, children's studies, daily problems... amidst all this, mother's loneliness seemed to be left behind.
Sunita noticed many times that the children now went less to grandmother's room. Earlier they used to listen to grandfather's stories, but now mobile and coaching had changed everything.
The next morning Sunita asked her mother - "Mother, don't you feel bad that all decisions are taken without asking you? Earlier, your opinion was taken in every work from father to household."
Sarla Devi replied calmly - "Daughter, thinking has to be changed. Earlier, when I and your father were together, we used to take all the decisions. Now times have changed. Today, children want freedom. If I force them, they will feel bad. If you want to increase the life of relationships, then you have to learn to remain silent."
Sunita was shocked to hear her mother's words. She thought that her mother had given up, but her mother looked into her eyes and said, "Daughter, losing and maintaining balance are two different things. I keep quiet so that there is no bitterness in the family. If it is very important to speak, I explain and say it. The rest of the time I spend in God."
Bhabhi Meenakshi was annoyed by Sunita's sudden arrival. She was afraid that Sunita might seduce her mother and demand a share in the house and land. But after a few days, she realized that Sunita had come to ask about her mother's well-being, not out of greed.
One day, finding her alone in the kitchen, Sunita said to Meenakshi, "Bhabhi, you are taking care of everything very well. But mother finds even a small matter very big. She does not speak, but says a lot in her silence.
If you ever feel that she is angry, then understand that she only needs a few sweet words from you."
Meenakshi became emotional after hearing Sunita's words. She understood that mother wanted only respect, nothing else.
One evening mother was sitting near Tulsi in the courtyard. Sunita went near her and asked softly - "Mother, don't you ever feel scared? Of loneliness... or of the future?"
Sarla Devi looked towards the sky and said - "Why should I be scared, daughter? I have never done any harm to anyone. I have full faith that my loved ones will take care of me. If I worry about the future, I will lose today's peace. And if I live today peacefully, tomorrow will also be easy."
Sunita had tears in her eyes. Mother held her hand and said - "Remember, if the tree breaks due to storms, then who will give shade? Mother's job is to give shade. No matter how weak she herself is from inside."
When Sunita was returning after a few days, her brother Vinay hugged her and said -
"Sister, you are right... Maa is still our shelter. We have less time, but we will never let Maa feel that she is alone."
Meenakshi also came close and said - "Lalita... Really, I thought you had come for a share. But you had come to show us the mirror of our responsibilities."
Sunita smiled. She felt that Maa was right - to save relationships, it is important to share not just property but also thoughts.
In this way, with her patience and positive thinking, Sarla Devi taught the whole family that situations change, people change, but if there is trust in the heart and respect in relationships, then the family never breaks.
