The universe is so vast that it is beyond our imagination. Among millions of stars and planets, scientists are constantly looking for a world where life is possible. In these searches, one name comes up again and again, K2-18b.
What is K2-18 b : - K2-18 b is an exoplanet, that is, a planet that is located outside our solar system. It was discovered by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope in 2015. This planet is located in the Leo constellation, about 120 light years away from us.
* This planet is about 2.6 times larger and 8 times heavier than Earth.
* It orbits its star K2-18 (a red dwarf star).
Its features : -
Habitable Zone : - K2-18b is at such a distance from its star that the temperature can be such that liquid water can exist on the surface. This is why it is being considered a "potentially habitable planet".
Water in the atmosphere : - In 2019, scientists found signs of water vapor in the atmosphere of K2-18b. This discovery was very exciting because this was the first time that signs of water were found in a super-Earth planet.
Atmosphere of hydrogen and helium : - There is a lot of presence of hydrogen and helium in its atmosphere. There is also a possibility of gases like methane and carbon dioxide in it.
Hycean World Hypothesis : - Scientists believe that K2-18b can be a Hycean Planet, that is, a planet covered with vast oceans and with an atmosphere full of hydrogen.
Possibility of life : -In 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope studied the atmosphere of K2-18b. It found signs of a special molecule dimethyl sulfide (DMS). On Earth, this gas is almost entirely produced by marine organisms. This means that the possibility of life on K2-18b cannot be ruled out.
Challenges : -
* This planet is much larger than Earth, which makes it difficult to understand the real conditions of its surface.
* It is possible that there is no solid ground on it and it is only covered with clouds and oceans.
* Its star type (red dwarf) is also challenging because it often releases intense radiation.
Conclusion : - K2-18b is the most interesting exoplanet so far because it shows the presence of water, possible organic molecules and habitable zone all three simultaneously. If alien life is ever discovered in the future, K2-18b will be at the forefront of those planets.
