Scientists Warn: A Devastating Tsunami Could Strike America's West Coast

Scientists have warned of a terrible natural disaster in the future. This warning is scaring the world and America in particular. Scientists have warned about a horrific tsunami (mega tsunami). They say that natural disaster can destroy America. They have said that this danger of tsunami will arise due to a powerful earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone. First there will be an earthquake and then a tsunami.

Researchers at Virginia Tech have predicted this earthquake and tsunami in a study. According to the study, some part of the coastline can sink up to 6.5 feet in the sea due to the earthquake. This will make the tsunami even more destructive. This danger is looming over Alaska, Hawaii and some areas of the west coast of America. Scientists said that this earthquake will come suddenly, due to which people will not even get a chance to escape.

When will the tsunami cause devastation : - The study says that there is a 15 percent chance of an earthquake of 8.0 magnitude in this area in the next 50 years.  Although it is not very likely, the danger cannot be ruled out. A powerful earthquake of magnitude 8 can submerge coastal areas up to 6.5 feet. Cities like Seattle, Portland, Oregon can be devastated by this tsunami. If an earthquake occurs in the Cascadia subduction zone, then Alaska, Hawaii and the west coast of America are at risk.

Tina Dura, assistant professor in the Department of Geology at Virginia Tech, is the lead author of this study. She said that the extent of the coastal floodplain after a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake has never been measured. She said that the study has found that the most damage is likely to occur in southern Washington, Oregon and northern California.

What is a mega tsunami : - A mega tsunami is different from a normal tsunami. During a normal tsunami, the waves are a few feet high, while in a mega-tsunami the waves can be hundreds of feet high. Such tsunamis are caused by events like powerful earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions or meteorite fall.

Mega tsunamis give people very little time to escape. Such events are rare, but if they occur in densely populated areas, they cause great devastation. Mega tsunamis are caused by underwater events, such as powerful earthquakes, landslides and volcanic eruptions.
