The Cosmic Origins of Gold: From Supernovae to Earth's Crust

There are many mysteries hidden in space, which scientists have been researching for years to know. The mystery of a metal like gold is also hidden in these mysteries. Now this question must be arising in your mind that where did gold come from? Scientists have solved this mystery. Gold is counted among the expensive metals of the world. In India, wearing gold jewellery on weddings and auspicious occasions is like a tradition.

Many people will know that there was no gold on earth. Scientists say that gold did not come with the formation of the earth, rather it reached the earth later from space. According to scientists, gold is formed anywhere in the universe by a process called supernova nucleosynthesis. When giant stars explode, this process takes place, due to which heavy metals like gold are formed and spread in space. It is said that all the gold on earth has come from dead stars. From there it went into the earth's crust.

According to scientists, about four billion years ago there was a heavy rain of meteorites on the earth.  Heavy elements like gold reached the earth due to the rain of meteors. Heavy metals like copper, platinum and gold were present in the inner layers of the earth.

Due to volcanic eruptions, it gradually came to the surface of the earth.  After this, when the molten metals came out of the volcanoes, very fine particles of gold started dissolving in water. This flowed and reached the rivers and seas. It was a very difficult task to take out these particles.

The density of the outer layer of the earth is light. Because of this, heavy metals like gold gradually went into the inner part of the earth. This is the reason why its quantity on the surface is very less. Not much gold has been found in India itself. However, a large amount of gold came to the country through trade.

In ancient times, clothes, spices and art used to go abroad from India, in exchange for which gold came. So much gold was collected by accumulating gold over the centuries. According to a data of economists, India currently has more than 10000 tonnes of gold.  This was revealed in a new study

A study has been conducted on where the gold came from under the leadership of Columbia University doctoral student Aniruddha Patel. This has revealed that magnetars (stars with highly magnetic neutrons) can help create and spread heavy elements like gold in the universe. This study has been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. It says that magnetar flares may have played a bigger role in this. Patel's team, which conducted the study, has used nearly 20-year-old data from the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA.
