The Vietnam government is preparing to ban the popular messaging app Telegram in the country soon. According to a Bloomberg report, the government alleges that illegal content is being spread on Telegram and it is not following local rules. Officials say that this platform is being used for activities against the country's public order and national security.
Groups becoming a hub of "toxic" content : - Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security has claimed that many Telegram groups in the country have now become centers of "toxic" content. These include anti-government content, fraud, drug trafficking and even buying and selling of illegal data. Officials say that Telegram has neither cooperated in removing such content nor has officially registered itself in Vietnam, which is mandatory under the country's law.
Internet providers got instructions : - Local telecom and internet service providers have been instructed to block Telegram, although Telegram and Vietnam's Technology Ministry have not yet made any official comment on this.
Vietnam is increasing online control : - Vietnam's one-party government has been increasing control over the internet and social media platforms for the past few years. Even though Facebook and YouTube are still available in the country, the government has taken a tough stand on dissent and unapproved content. In 2023, the government implemented a rule that made it mandatory for foreign social media companies to verify the identity of their users and give it to the government.
