The Haunting Tale of the 'Road of Bones'

Many roads in the world are very special for some reason or the other. Some roads in the world are the most dangerous, while some are the longest. Usually, bricks, stones, cement and asphalt are used to build roads. But do you know that there is a road in the world, which, apart from these things, has also been built using human bones? You may not believe it, but it is absolutely true. Because of this, this road is known as the 'Road of Bones'.

Actually, this road is a highway, which is located in the Far East region of Russia. Its real name is the Kolyma Highway, which is 2,025 kilometers long. Human bones and skeletons are often found on this highway. Human bones have been found in different areas many times.

Actually, the story of this highway, famous as the 'Road of Bones', is horrifying. In winters, there is heavy snowfall in this area, due to which the roads get covered. It is said that to prevent vehicles from slipping on the road due to snow, human bones were also mixed with sand in road construction.

This highway was constructed during the time of Joseph Stalin, the dictator of the Soviet Union. It is said that 2.5 to 10 lakh people lost their lives in its construction.

The story behind this is that the construction of this highway started in the 1930s and bonded labourers and prisoners were employed in this work. They were kept as prisoners in the Kolyma camp.

It is said that once a prisoner went to the Kolyma camp, it was impossible for him to return. Those who tried to escape from here could not survive for long because they either became prey to bears or died of severe cold or hunger. It is said that the prisoners who died were buried inside the road itself.
