Peace activist John McConnell proposed to celebrate Earth Day for the first time in the UNESCO conference. This conference was held in the year 1969.
Earlier the purpose of celebrating this day was to honor the Earth. For the first time this day was celebrated by the United States on 22 April 1970 and after this in the year 1990 Dennis Hayes proposed to celebrate this day globally.
Only after this proposal of Dennis Hayes, 141 countries agreed to it and also participated in it. After this, Earth Day was dedicated to public air protection in the year 2016.
