The World's Unique Island Connected by Two Bridges




This small island situated in the west of Greece is connected to the world only by two bridges. Like the city of Venice, here too there is a network of canals and bridges. Not only this, the historical buildings here, a national park, a church and the people here enhance its beauty.

In addition to being an island, Aitoliko is also a wonderful city. This island is located between two lagoons of western Greece. Its most special thing is that despite being like Venice, it is not crowded, but the population here is only 1200.

The area here is only 129 square kilometers. It is governed by local government and is considered part of the Messolonghi Municipality area.  There are fields and grasslands with rocky areas in the east. There are marshy areas in the west where many birds are found.

The island's name is derived from its association with the Aetolian League, an ancient Greek confederation.

There is such a wonderful network of canals here that floods do not occur here. Because of this, there are a large number of fish and birds here. This is the reason why the economic activity here is dependent on agriculture, fisheries and tourism. There is not much activity here. The entire city is full of bridges and narrow roads.

The southern lagoon empties into the Ionian Sea. Many plants and animals can be seen here in the Messolonghi Aitoliko Lagoon National Park.  About 290 birds and 100 fish are found here.  Situated between two lagoons, this island is connected to the world only by two bridges.  

The most special thing here is that there is no traffic here. Small bridges and many canals here give a different beauty to the island. Tourists coming here also prefer walking.

Aitoliko Island is not just about canals and paths. There are many historical things and places here. The Church of Virgin Mary here is a wonderful example of 17th century architecture. The paintings carved on the walls of this church located in the main plaza are considered very attractive. The island is rich in archaeological sites, including ancient walls and ruins dating back to the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Numerous artifacts found on the island can be traced back to the Mycenaean and Roman eras.

The living standard of the people here is also considered very good and the people here are also considered cooperative for tourists. Its safe and efficient transportation, easy access roads, bridges, old buildings make it a beautiful and cultural city.

Aitolika Island played a crucial role in ancient Greek history, being a strategic outpost during various conflicts.

Aitolika Island's strategic location and natural resources attracted ancient settlers, including the Phoenicians and Byzantines.
