It is believed that thousands of years ago, the length of humans used to be more than today. At the same time, such a change over time is a question in itself, why such a change in the length of humans happened? To find out about this, the team of scientists did a research, in which it came to the fore that the reason behind the reduction in height was farming by our ancestors. According to a report, a team of scientists has analyzed the skeletal DNA of 167 ancient people in Europe, which showed that the average length of humans was reduced by 1.5 inches due to farming. Actually, agriculture started in Europe 12 thousand years ago. Whereas before farming, man used to make a living by hunting etc. In such a situation, when humans shifted their lifestyle towards crops, it had an effect on the length. Experts say that short stature is a sign of poor health. This suggests that at that time humans did not get enough nutrition for proper development.
Indeed, the research was led by Stephanie Marciniak, assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at Penn State University at the State College of Pennsylvania. Professor Marciniak has told that this research included genetic contributions along with measuring the bones of ancient people.
He said that the change from agrarian lifestyle did not happen all at once across Europe. This change happened at different times in different places. According to the Encyclopdia Britannica, agriculture in Greece began to affect the length of humans about 9 thousand years ago. Whereas, even in Britain for the next two thousand years, no effect was seen.
The 167 human skeletons studied in this research were found all around Europe, of which 67 were female and 100 male skeletons, which lived between 38,000 and 2,400 years ago.
Actually, these skeletons were found in Romania, Spain, Poland, Britain, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Czech Republic, Croatia, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Italy, France, Ireland and Scotland etc.
