The Nile River facts

  • The name Neil derives from the Greek word 'nilos'.  
  • The Nile River is the longest river in the world.  
  • The total length of this river is 6,650 km.  
  • The maximum width of this river is 16 kilometers and in some places the width of this river decreases to less than 200 meters.
  • The river forms a vast delta 160 km long and 240 km wide at its mouth.
  • The Nile River passes through about 11 countries in Africa, the main countries being Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.  
  • The Nile has two main tributaries - the White Nile and the Blue Nile.The White Nile is considered the main stream of the Nile River and the Blue Nile is considered the source of most of the water.  
  • The Aswan Dam was built on the Nile between 1960 and 1970 to avoid flooding in the Nile River.  
  • The Nile River flows from south to north.  
  • The Nile River originates from Africa's largest lake Victoria, crossing the eastern part of the Great Sahara Desert and falling into the Mediterranean Sea in the north.

  • The Nile provides goods to Egyptians to build homes and buildings.  
  • Egyptians make their home from the wet soil of the river.  
  • Apart from this, they also get limestone and sandstone from the river banks.
